trugs
(the ultimate gift hamper for personal or corporate giving)
A trug is a wide, footed, shallow open basket of simple wooden construction. Trugs were originally used by Sussex farmers as measures or scoops for grain or liquid, in several sizes for different measures. They appear in 1600's records as inventory from a farm in Newhaven, East Sussex:
"a dozen of trogs in the milking parlour ".

Trug making is a traditional and exacting craft. All materials used derive from sustainable resources.
We import only authentic trugs handmade by craftsmen from the family-owned company in England who have passed down time honoured traditions for over 180 years. Each trug is personally signed by the artisan who created it...

In the 1820's a Sussex craftsman re-designed the original trugs which were solid and very heavy into the trugs we know today. He selected Cricket Bat Willow (Salix Coerulea) which is in plentiful supply in the nearby Pevensey Marshes. He split the Willow using wedges and sledgehammers before sawing them into slats by hand and then hand shaving these slats to form the boards of his Trug. These boards were light in weight and perfectly complemented the strong Chestnut frame. They were fixed using solid copper tacks and the legs were finally added, using copper clout nails.

Trugs give an old-fashioned feel of bygone, less-hectic days. Their practicality and strength remain timeless - and when not on gardening duty, a trug can be used inside the house as a centrepiece on the hall or dining table filled with fruit or flowers, in the kitchen to store eggs, in the bathroom for small rolled towels, filled with holly for festive decoration .
...Traditional trugs are the forerunner of modern brightly coloured plastic tubs.
...Trugs are renowned for their strength, durability and usefulness.
The word trug is derived from ‘trog’, an Anglo Saxon word meaning wooden vessel in the shape of the round coracle boat used by the Anglo Saxons.
